“Abraham Lincoln’s Life in Music” Program

Elizabeth Smith Brownstein, author of Lincoln’s Other White House, will present her new program on President Lincoln’s life through music on two separate occasions in January and February. 

“Abraham Lincoln’s Life in Music”

The Civil War has been described as “a musical war” and Abraham Lincoln-a lover of music of all kinds-heard and sang much of the music of his time. With little formal education, his musical tastes nevertheless ranged from sentimental ballads and nonsense songs to opera. Pianist Elizabeth Smith Brownstein, author of “Lincoln’s Other White House”, plays a selection of well-known songs of the period and explains their significance in Lincoln’s life. This is a unique program, offering insights into rarely considered aspects of Lincoln’s temperament and leadership.
